Pretty Purple Desk

Ah I’m so excited to FINALLY be sharing this piece with you. I’ve shared so many sneak peeks and it’s been done for a while now, but I had other things I needed to post about first. But now this little lady can bask in all it’s purply, watercolor glory.

PRETTY PURPLE DESK

Pretty Purple Desk

I bought this antique sewing table over a year ago (yikes) at a local church garage sale. It was sitting in our friend’s garage until a couple months ago when I finally remembered what an awesome piece it was and it needed some lovin’ stat.

As you know, with most sewing tables, the top opens up and there is a big ‘ole hole to place your machine. Since I was turning it into a desk, that hole needed to go. I thought about cutting a piece of wood to fit the hole, but it was kind of an awkward curved shape and that just wouldn’t have gone well. For me, or the wood.

Enter the hubs, who gets full cred here. I didn’t think we could remove the entire top without the whole thing falling apart but he proved me wrong and unscrewed that sucker like a pro.

Then I just needed to buy a new piece of wood from Home Depot. We brought it home and screwed it on to the body. You can’t even tell a difference right?!

New Desk Top

So don’t ask me how I came up with the idea for this desk. At the time, I’d been using some purple craft paint in a few DIYs and clearly I was thinking bigger than frames and coasters. Remember a while back when I told you about the awesome sale Ace Hardware was having on their sample paint cans? $.99 a pop people. I bought like 15. Anyways, one of the colors I bought was the prettiest purple called Thyme Flower.

I mixed it up with some of my Vintage Storehouse Chalky Paint Powder and went to town, then sealed the whole piece with General Finishes Finishing Wax.

Those pretty little legs needed an update too, because that black was just too harsh. I taped them up and gave them a coat of my favorite gold spray paint.

And of course, such a pretty color, needed just as pretty accessories.

Desk Details

Knobs are from HomeGoods and the paper is from Spoonflower.

I cut out some card stock the same size as the drawer fronts and then traced that on my paper and cut them out.

Applying Paper to Drawers

Using my trusty Spray Adhesive, I attached the paper.

And finito! I’m totally in love with this piece and how it turned out. I struggled with finding some art to stage it.  Because I took these photos right before we moved, I had no idea where anything was. Easy solution was framing the left over paper 🙂 Works like a charm.

What do you think about this little purple desk?! I’m guessing you’ll either love it or hate it, which is fine with me. But hopefully you’re a lover 😉

Gorgeous table! I have searched through hundreds of wallpapers on Spoonflower to find the gorgeous paper you used? Do you recall what the name of the wallpaper is?

    Thanks!

This is gorgeous Bre! Oh my, I am swooning over the color and the gold accents – perrrrfect. The paper is such a pretty accompaniment and I just love how you create matching artwork to stage your pieces. So I’ve got to ask, if it’s a girl, are you keeping this?
