Olive & Old White Two Toned Table

Date
Sep, 25, 2014

It’s Themed Furniture Makeover Day again! This month’s theme was “Two Toned” which I was super excited about. But let me tell you, this project was almost a big. fat. FAIL.

Now I know what you must be thinking “But Bre, your furniture is always so beautiful, how could you mess something up?” Kidding 😉 Seriously though, I almost threw this guy away.

OLIVE & WHITE TWO TONED TABLE

Olive and White Table

So, if you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you might remember me posting when I picked this table up for $5. Holla!

Table Before

Can’t beat that price right? Except if it was free 🙂 I knew it would be perfect to transform into a two toned piece and right away knew I wanted to use my little sample of Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan in Olive, paired with some Old White.

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

So far so good. I painted the drawer and back panel Old White, and the rest Olive. Now here’s where things start to go wrong. I was pretty set on using Dark Wax but thought I’d add some Old White to it and turn it into a bit of a darker white wash.

Mixing Wax and Paint

It looked great over the Olive. Not so great over the Old White…

Terrible Mistake

Hideous right? Yep. Straight up F-U-G-L-Y. So then I tried just using some plain Dark Wax over that. Bad, bad idea. Looked even worse. I really wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I literally sat on my porch and stared at it for a while, hoping for a stroke of genius. Honestly, I considered scratching the whole thing.

Since I already covered the Old White parts in wax, I wasn’t sure if painting over them would work. But at this point I was willing to try anything.

And that folks, is why I love Annie Sloan.

The paint went on so smoothly over the wax, it was like I was painting it for the first time. Praise the Lord. We were back in business. I didn’t want to mess it up again so I didn’t even distress the white, except for very mildly on the edges of the drawer.

Distressed Drawer

I’m actually glad it worked out this way because I love the contrast of the old distressed look of the green paired with the crispness of the white. I stuck with clear wax this time for the white parts 🙂 Furniture fail avoided!

I just saw this on Pinterest and LOVE it! I have a table just like this one and I also rescued it from a thrift store for $5. I couldn’t decide what to do with it but now my imagination is running wild. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

I hate it when a project doesn’t live up to my vision! Good save with the white paint. I really like the contrast of the white and dark waxed green 🙂

You know I love Annie Sloan paints too! 🙂 I haven’t tried olive yet- but it looks so great on your piece that now I may need to. Dark wax is always a little tricky. You can remove much of it right away by applying clear wax over it again but it won’t come off all the way. Good call just repainting over the white!

Bre this post couldn’t have come at a better time because I’m working on a piece right now where I had to do the stand back and take a good hard look at it and like you, I repainted over a section after it had already been waxed. Don’t you just love chalk paint! I haven’t tried ASCP Olive color yet but I’m liking it with the dark wax. Yup, your sweet table looks great with clean white against the dirty Olive. The square knob is perfect for this piece too! What a difference between the before and after. I’m really enjoying this series and look forward to it every month. You gals are a talented bunch!
