It’s Themed Furniture Makeover Day again! This month’s theme was “Two Toned” which I was super excited about. But let me tell you, this project was almost a big. fat. FAIL. Now I know what you must be thinking “But Bre, your furniture is always so beautiful, how could you mess something up?” Kidding 😉 Seriously though, I almost threw this guy away.
Can’t beat that price right? Except if it was free 🙂 I knew it would be perfect to transform into a two toned piece and right away knew I wanted to use my little sample of Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan in Olive, paired with some Old White.
So far so good. I painted the drawer and back panel Old White, and the rest Olive. Now here’s where things start to go wrong. I was pretty set on using Dark Wax but thought I’d add some Old White to it and turn it into a bit of a darker white wash.
It looked great over the Olive. Not so great over the Old White…
Hideous right? Yep. Straight up F-U-G-L-Y. So then I tried just using some plain Dark Wax over that. Bad, bad idea. Looked even worse. I really wasn’t sure what I was going to do. I literally sat on my porch and stared at it for a while, hoping for a stroke of genius. I considered scratching the whole thing.
Since I already covered the Old White parts in wax, I wasn’t sure if painting over them would work. But at this point I was willing to try anything.
And that folks, is why I love Annie Sloan.
The paint went on so smoothly over the wax, it was like I was painting it for the first time. Praise the Lord. We were back in business. I didn’t want to mess it up again so I didn’t even distress the white, except for very mildly on the edges of the drawer.
I’m actually glad it worked out this way because I love the contrast of the old distressed look of the green paired with the crispness of the white. I stuck with clear wax this time for the white parts 🙂 Furniture fail avoided!
So what do you think of my first manly piece? I’m glad it wasn’t a total disaster! Be sure to check out all the other fabulous two toned projects in the link up below 🙂
Have a great day friends!
