Stenciled Dresser

02/17/14

This project was a birthday present for my mom. She was updating a room in the house into her crafting/quilting room and wanted a dresser to hold all her quilting materials. It took me a while to find the perfect dresser, causing this present to be a few weeks late. It was definitely worth the wait! I found it at the Salvation Army and was originally told it was $20. I couldn’t get a hold of my mom, however, so had to come back later after I got her approval. Thankfully it was still there. When I went to pay for it, the cashier asked her coworker how much it was and I was shocked to hear her respond $50. The woman who I spoke with earlier was there and I was grateful she chimed in. Apparently their manager had wanted them to price it at $50 but somehow that message got relayed improperly. They honored what they told me earlier and told me I was getting a steal. A guy had come in earlier and looked at it, but declined when he heard the $50 price tag. This dresser was meant for me!

This dresser is super sturdy and has great bones. I just love the shape of it and couldn’t wait to start the transformation. I started by adding a couple coats of primer.

One of the down falls of starting this blog and all my projects is my work space. I’ve been working on our porch, but now that the snow is right around the corner, I’m not going to freeze my behind off in the cold. Luckily with this project, I was only painting, and I could continue inside in our spare bedroom.

My mom wanted the dresser painted cream and it took about 3 coats to get it evenly covered. She had mentioned she might want a design painting on it as well, which made me nervous because I am a terrible free hand painter. While I was at Home Depot buying the paint, I stumbled across the Martha Stewart collection and found the perfect stencil and gold accent paint to use on the drawers.

I can’t remember the last time I used a stencil like this and was a little nervous about the way it would turn out. It’s definitely tricky to not let the paint get underneath and go outside the lines. There were a few imperfections but nothing that ruined the design, only added character 🙂

I originally thought I was going to replace the hardware, or spray paint what it came with black. But after it was all painted and I held them up to the drawers, they actually went quite well with the new look. I decided to keep them as is and screwed them back in.

I lugged this baby home with me this past weekend to give to my mom and she absolutely loved it! I think it looks wonderful in it’s new home!

More and more lately we’re realizing the importance of family and nurturing those relationships. This was the perfect place to unwind, reconnect and enjoy an adventure together without worrying about capturing it all on our phones. We went for a hike, sat by the fire, ate wayyy too many pastries and cheeses and loved every minute of it. Sharing a video tour in stories today! As always, there’s two sizes for you to choose from and a short easy tutorial for you to follow to make the cute little wooden stand too 📅 My little office nook has gone through a lot of phases since we first moved in 4.5 years ago (swipe through to see them all!) and last year I finally upgraded my desk to one I could properly sit at 🤣 I took two Alex drawers from IKEA and added wood trim and caning for an elevated look and topped it off with a faux butcher block counter made from a $30 door slab. 👊🏻 the cherry on top for this space was our new skylight that instantly brightened it up and brings in so much beautiful natural light ☀️ this nook never felt quite right until now and I’m excited to spend more time here this year working on lots of exciting projects! Oh 2020. While it wasn’t what any of us expected Oh 2020. While it wasn’t what any of us expected I’m focusing on all the good that came out of it. I remember sitting with Dan New Year’s Eve last year and being so hopeful for what our future held and praying it would bring us another baby after we had been trying with no luck. I found out only a couple weeks later I was pregnant and that joy carried us through the year even though it brought fear and worry along with it. Besides welcoming our sweet baby girl into our lives we experienced so many other amazing things. The time we got to spend as a family is something we’ll always cherish. We worked on so many projects together and continued to pour our hearts into making this house a place we can call home. And we built A LOT of arches 🤣 Eloise was on the cover of a magazine, Hawk’s hair grew back in full force, we beat Covid and captain Christmas reminded us what the holiday season is really about. but most importantly we leaned into god and relied on him more than ever to get us through each day. That’s the relationship I want to continue to work on and I’m grateful that this year nudged me closer to the One who deserves all the glory and continues to be faithful 🙏🏻 happy new year friends 🤍 cheers to 2021 🍾
