The Little Cloth Co. - Vintage Inspired Baby Gear

The Little Cloth Co. - Vintage Inspired Baby Gear

Ok I feel like every time I sit down to write one of my Real Life Ramblings posts I have an exciting announcement to make! I guess there’s just a lot of exciting stuff happening around here lately 🙂

On top of our move, my BHG shoot, taking care of a 5 month old and just life in general things are pretty hectic. But that usually seems to be the time that we make things even more hectic by adding more to our plates, right?? So what better time than to start my own baby headband line?!

I’ve been daydreaming about this pretty much ever since I was pregnant and started buying headbands for Eloise. And once she was born and I realized how much I loved them, and of course how cute she looked in them, I knew I had to do it. I just had to figure out what type of patterns I wanted to use. There are SO many different brands, companies and small businesses out there already that sell headbands so I had to figure out how to make mine unique. If you’ve been a follower of mine for a little while, you’ve probably noticed my recent love affair with indigo, mudcloth and other vintage textiles. One day as I was perusing around for some indigo pillow covers, I had a light bulb moment. These are the patterns and designs I truly love and they have to be what I use for my headbands. I did some googling to see if any already existed, and much to my surprise they didn’t. But a vintage textile, hand dyed from Africa doesn’t exactly scream baby, does it? I needed a way to turn these textiles into something safe that wouldn’t have every mother out there questioning me. So I got to work.

Over the past 3 or 4 months, I’ve been busy sourcing some gorgeous textiles from Thailand as well as designing some vintage inspired patterns myself. I’ve never done any textile designing before, but I absolutely love it. I’m hooked. It’s so fun seeing your designs come to life.

The mudcloth patterns I designed in Illustrator and the indigo ones I hand dyed myself. Which was SO fun. I figured out an easy way to make these awesome patterns that I love so much without paying the high price. I’m still debating if I want to share that secret or not 😉

The other hmong patterns I found on eBay and came from Thailand. Everything that wasn’t designed on the computer I took pictures of so they would be easy to reproduce and turn into a safe fabric for babies. Which is where Spoonflower came in. I’ve been a fan of them for a while now, and have bought a lot of my fabric and paper I use to line furniture drawers with from them. But the coolest thing about their site, is that you can design your own stuff. You simply upload your picture, play around with some different settings they have, and before you know it, your gorgeous, one of a kind fabric arrives on your doorstep.

My box just arrived Wednesday and I couldn’t believe how well they turned out. I’ll be using a modern jersey fabric which is so soft and stretchy and perfect for babes.

So now that I have all my fabric, it’s time to get sewing! And what makes this even more exciting is that my mom is going to be helping me out. She’s a sewing, knitting, crafting, scrapbooking extraordinaire and she gave me my first featherweight sewing machine. I’ve had it for a little while now, but was honestly scared of using it, which was silly because it’s seriously the easiest thing ever. She’s coming to visit this weekend for a few days and I can’t wait to start cranking some of these headbands out.

And although I’ll be starting with headbands, I’d love to expand into other fun baby gear down the road.

Things are still in the early stages but I wanted to share my excitement with you and let you in on this big secret. I’m hoping to launch the shop by the end of the summer/early fall but until then you can follow along on social media.

So spread the word! Tell all the mamas in your life with little girls that there’s gonna be a new headband line in town. And there might even be something for boys too 😉

I’m so excited to start this little venture and create something beautiful that Eloise can wear. She inspires me every day to do what I love and be the best mom I can be, and I just hope I’m setting a good example for her to always chase your dreams <3

Hi Bre, I was just on your site trying to get some ideas for an old dresser we picked up and this post caught my attention. My wife started making bows for my daughter when she was about 6 mos old (she is now 14 mos) and they turned out quite nice. She has sold some to friends and at community sales. Could I send you some pics? Not sure the goal here but she may be interested in trying a few with the patterns you have picked out for your headbands or maybe you could feature some of her bows – if they line up with your style/vision. Anyway, congrats on the new adventure and the continued success.

p.s. sad to see your talent leave Erie but happy for you and your family.

Wow Bre, all kinds of doors are opening for you – very exciting! I’ll share this with my niece (who you remind me a lot of) who has a three month old baby who is always wearing a headband. I know she’ll love your fabric patterns.
